Electrocatalysis is emerging as a versatile tool for upgrading bio-based building blocks into valuable chemicals.

Three case studies that showcase different electrocatalytic pathways for biomass valorization will be discussed, starting with the reductive amination of levulinic acid, where the influence of trace lead impurities is uncovered. Next, a descriptor-based study is presented, providing insights into catalytic trends across various reactions, including glycerol oxidation, using perovskite oxides as a model system. The discussion concludes with the electro-oxidation of glycerol via its solketal derivative, demonstrating how molecular modifications can steer reaction pathways and enhance efficiency. Finally, the industrial feasibility of this process is evaluated including a techno-economic analysis.
