Scientific Focus and Study Content

The key areas of research in both faculties are related to their respective institutes such as Analytical Chemistry, Bioanalytical Chemistry, Industrial Chemistry, Inorganic Chemistry, Organic Chemistry and Physical Chemistry. Research themes originate from these fundamental areas of chemistry underpinned by strong fundamental scientific education – which both universities share.

The number of courses that students from Leipzig University can choose during their study at Monash University depends on how many scientific modules – both lectures and advanced, research-focused lab courses – they have already completed in the first semester of their M. Sc. program. Completition of modules at Monash will be reflected in what and how many other courses have to be chosen upon returning to Leipzig for the third semester.

According to the course plan, the second semester in Leipzig should comprise 20 credit points (CPs) for lectures and 10 CPs for an advanced lab course. However, it is also possible to undertake two advanced lab courses at Monash University for 10 CPs. Alternatively, students can enroll in the course “Chemistry Research Project”, CHM4100, offered within the B. Sc. Honours program in the School of Chemistry at Monash. The program matches Leipzig requirements with respect to both time commitment and content covered (see below). The third advanced lab course must be conducted at Leipzig University. In order to prevent students from losing too much time due to their exchange, this third lab course is usually conducted within the institute that the exchange student chooses for their Master's thesis to acquaint them with the respective research topic.

In general, our students are allowed to choose from the complete undergraduate program offered in the School of Chemistry at Monash.

The following courses have been approved as either equivalent or complementary to Leipzig University’s courses and modules in the M. Sc. (Chemistry) program:

All courses listed above (with exception of CHM4100 and CHM4201) usually consist of two 1-hour workshops, one hour directed independent study and the equivalent of three hours of laboratory activity per semester week (a semester in Monash lasts 13 weeks including a week-long mid semester break). All courses are assessed and graded based on a written exam, a mid semester test and/or assignments and lab work including writen-up reports (for details on individual assessment contributions to the final grade please consult with the online Monash University Handbook). Referring to the workload and the regulations of the Leipzig-based M. Sc. (Chemistry) program, all listed courses (with exception of CHM4100 and CHM4201) are accredited with 5 credit points (CPs).

The above-mentioned courses CHM4100 “Chemistry Research Project” and CHM4201 “Chemistry Honours Coursework” are prerequisites for obtaining the B. Sc. Honours degree at Monash University. Course CHM4100 “Chemistry Research Project” (36 points from Monash, only to be taken in combination with CHM4201 for Monash's students) is considered equivalent to one advanced lab course ("Wahlpflichtpraktikum"/"Vertiefungspraktikum", three have to be conducted in the first three semesters, about 150-200 h of lab work each) in Leipzig and thus accredited with 10 CPs.

Course CHM4201 "Chemistry Honours Coursework" (12 points from Monash, only to be taken in combination with CHM4100 for Monash's students) consist of different modules. Each Honours student at Monash will undertake a Professional Studies topic and one core topic defined by the School, as well as three elective topics from specialized areas of chemistry, with all topics being individually assessed via a written exam and assignments/lab reports. As each of the elective topics will require students to attend 8 lecture equivalents this will make a total of 48 lecture equivalents. For students from Leipzig, two times 5 CPs (distributed over the sub-topics) will be accredited for choosing this course.
